EU Circular Economy Listed About Blanks as Good practice
EU Circular Economy is a joint initiative by the European Commission and the European Economic and Social Committee.
The European Circular Economy Stakeholder Platform listed About Blanks as Good Practice on their website.
About Blanks makes sketchbooks and notebooks from old books and recycled materials found in closets, attics and at book fairs.
The old book covers are reused by removing the pages inside and refilling the cover with sustainable blank sketch paper. Each About Blanks note- and sketchbook is different and therefore unique. Sustainability goes beyond reusing and recycling materials. About Blanks products are made in a social employment facility, where people with a disability or poor job prospects can get a job and participate in society.
Sustainability also means that a product should last a long time and so quality plays an important role, with materials selected appropriately. The sketch paper comes from responsible sources (FSC).

The idea of what would later become ‘About: Blanks’ started in 2013. At that time, I was studying at the Willem de Kooning Academie and spent a lot of time in the central library in Rotterdam.
One day, I discovered a stack of old books that the library wanted to get rid of for a couple of euros. I have always been fascinated by the look, texture and smell of old book covers, so I walked over to take a look. Most of the books were from the early 1900s. Back then, it was common to not only bind books, but also magazines, newspapers or theater plays for preservation reasons. Therefore, not all of them had a title, but a fairly plane cover design which reminded me of a notebook. That was the moment when I thought: ‘If these books are not read anymore, wouldn’t it be nice to at least give these beautiful covers a new life?’

Kjell Betlem uit Rotterdam had in 2013 een idee: bewaar de mooie omslagen, haal het bedrukte binnenwerk eruit en vul de banden met chic blanco papier. About: Blanks was geboren: fijne schets- en notitieboeken, gehuld in ouderwetse boekomslagen.

Not a Book: a notebook
How did you get this idea?
“I was lost the moment I saw a stack of old books in the library that had been written off, a few years ago. The covers of the books were so beautiful and, somehow, their smell was special, too. Some of the books really reminded me of a favorite sketchbook I used to draw in, and that’s how I got the idea. In the end, it turned into a business because more and more people I knew also wanted to have a book like that.”

Kaft van antiek boek wordt uniek schriftje
Een bijzondere print of pakkende titel. Dat zijn de voorwaarden die Kjell Betlem (25) stelt aan de oude boeken die hij gebruikt voor zijn met de handgemaakte notitieboekjes: About Blanks. De Rotterdammer geeft oude boeken zo een tweede leven. Zonde? ,,Nee hoor. Anders liggen de boeken toch maar ergens stof te happen,’’ aldus Kjell.
Schrijven in een schriftje? Gebeurt dit anno 2014 nog waar iedereen achter zijn laptop zit te tikken? Je zou bijna denken van niet. Maar met de komst van al die flitsende hoogstandjes rukt ook de hang naar nostalgie op. En daarom zijn de unieke About Blanks notitieboekjes, gemaakt van kaften van oude boeken, niet aan te slepen. De boekjes worden in tientallen winkels door het land verkocht en sinds kort ook in Franse plaatsje Belves.
Kjell, vormgever van beroep, gebruikt dagelijks schriftjes om in te schetsen. Zijn liefde voor oude boekjes brengt hem vier jaar geleden op een idee waarvan hij nooit had verwacht (wel gehoopt) er geld mee te kunnen verdienen. Hij gebruikt de kaft van een oud toneelstuk om er een schetsboek van te maken. ,,In de Rotterdamse bibliotheek vond ik de toneelstukken tussen een stapel afgeprijsde oude boeken. Ik vond de kaften super mooi. Thuis haalde ik ze los van de inhoud en plakte er blanco blaadjes in,’’ blikt Kjell terug.
Zijn unieke schriftjes vallen op bij vrienden. ,,Steeds meer vrienden wilden er ook eentje hebben. Vorige zomer bedacht ik me ineens dat er misschien wel meer mensen geïnteresseerd in zouden zijn,’’ glimlacht Kjell. Zodoende richt hij About Blanks op. Een naam die niet alleen refereert aan de witte pagina’s in het notitieboekje. Het is ook een knipoog naar de (witte) startpagina, about:blank, van je internet browser.
De oude boeken duikelt Kjell op bij de markt aan de Hoogstraat of bij Blaak. Sinds kort wordt hij ook een handje geholpen door een Rotterdamse boekenhandelaar die stad en land afreist op zoek naar boekjes met een mooi patroon, bijzondere print of pakkende titel. Wat er met de inhoud van de boeken gebeurt? ,,Eerst bewaarde ik het allemaal. Mijn studentenkamer raakte overvol en dus heb ik ook al veel weg gedaan. Ik zoek nog iemand die er iets leuks mee wil doen, dus bij deze,’’ doet Kjell snel een oproep.
Tot voor kort maakte Kjell alle schriftjes zelf met de hand in zijn atelier aan huis. ,,Ik had echt geen idee wat ik aan het doen was en er zijn er ook veel mislukt hoor. Ik wist toen bijvoorbeeld nog niet dat je bij het lijmen rekening moet houden met de looprichting van het papier.’’ Aangezien er tegenwoordig zo’n 200 stuks per maand gemaakt moeten worden, heeft Kjell hulp van de sociale werkplaats ingeschakeld.
En dat is hard nodig, want de Rotterdammer wil graag uitbreiden. Zijn eerste verkooppunt in Frankrijk is pas het begin. ,,Ik wil mijn notitieboekjes internationaal verkopen en verder wil ik vooral producten maken die de creativiteit en inspiratie stimuleren.’’

Earlier Sieb from Good Ideas Grow on Trees interviewed us about our notebooks: Do you know that inkling feeling of happiness when entering a store and coming across a product that immediately just reasons with you?
For me that is what happened a few weeks ago when I came across the About:Blanks notebooks in concept store Daily Poetry. I tracked owner Kjell Betlem down, and asked him all about his notebook business
People were really enthusiastic about the notebooks I made them, so I decided to build a webshop. Because of my background in graphic design and photography I was able to do this, and my own branding, without having to hire outside help. The first few months I got quit a few orders but when it slowed down I realised I had to reach out to more people. An acquaintance of mine owns a store so I took a bunch of my books to her store, and she was happy to sell them! I reached out to more shops, and soon demand was up to a level that I couldn’t quit make them all by myself anymore. Luckily I found a social employment facility where my books are made to this date.

Vandaag hebben we displays gemaakt om onze notitie- en schetsboeken een waardig podium te geven. De Displays zijn gemaakt met een laser snijder van het Stadslab in Rotterdam. De laser is zo sterk dat je er gemakkelijk mee door hout kan snijden en hoe koel, je kan er ook mee graveren!

Afgelopen zondag stond About Blanks voor de tweede keer op de Swan Market! Het was een heerlijke zonnige dag. Onze schetsboeken en notitieboeken stonden er warmpjes bij! We hebben veel nieuwe mensen ontmoet en leuke gesprekken gehad! Alles bij elkaar een groot succes! Zien we je tijdens de volgende Swan Market editie?
